Matthias's blog

...is being written mainly for Matthias really. Caution: May not be interesting for you...

I finished writing up

08 02 10, 2:54:27

Yes. I think that may be worth a blog post. I have some 170 pages of PhD thesis, now going to be reviewed. But I won't rest... I'll try to make Vamp plugins from my algorithms in the thesis. At least I'll try, that is.

After a long time

16 09 08, 7:04:32

... I have been convinced I should be writing a blog again. By Karin Dressler who I met at ISMIR in Philadelphia. So now a detailed description of the last eight months: or rather not. ISMIR is good fun, and I'm quite zuversichtlich (look it up in case you don't know) that my thesis is going to turn out well. Ain't that amazing. Well have a good one everybody, see you soon! DMRN and Unna again

24 12 07, 14:20:45

Deary me, that last week I was a bit stressed, I must admit. But it was well worth it especially the poster I presented at our own DMRN conference was really worth making, and I got some good feedback from the workshop attendees. The OMRAS2 presentation was not just as nice, but it sor'of worked alright. People were interested in my Beatles Chord Change Browser. I wonder if I should make a real prototype of it (as opposed to the crappy buggy piece of code I have right now...). Ontology Unna Sex

11 10 07, 23:53:02

Just wanted to attract attention. These days have been quite busy. That's great, I really like it. Not being a programmer I get quite exhausted by coding. Actually I haven't been coding much at all, my colleague Chris Sutton has: he's done a good job making chord data from the ("our") Music Ontology accessible to my JAVA code. That's brilliant, and it'll take me some time to adapt my code so it can actually handle the new kind of data. But we're going to be much closer to a kind of integrated system. Which is cool. So I'll try to be very active tomorrow morning, and maybe while I'm waiting for the plane: I'm going to my dear home town Unna tomorrow for a cczy weekend with my parents. And possibly some other people. We'll see. Now I have to get a shower (have been canoeing earlier this evening), and then go to sleep! Have a good time everyone! M

ISMIR

25 09 07, 9:37:15

I'm in Vienna, yes! At the ISMIR conference, and so far it has been as great as I expected it would be! Today, I'm giving my talk, so let's see what kind of comments I get. I think my talk is in the middle fo the range. I have seen really good stuff, but also some few rather strange talks I can definitely measure up to... Vienna is fantastic! I have been here some 13 years ago and just did not realise how beautiful it was! Oh, now I should listen to the keynote lecture. See you!

Business

The business of biology is survival and procreation, not truth or accuracy. (David Huron, in Sweet Anticipation, p. 105)

my mum / ISMIR countdown

07 09 07, 15:23:37

Servus! I'm getting ready for my ISMIR presentation in Vienna on later this month. I somewhat dreaded the making of the slides although I like to present stuff - if I'm happy with what I present as my work. It took me some time to convince myself that my stuff is worth presenting... Well, much more exciting results are to come, I think. The other thing is my mum: she had a small operation today, and I already talked to her - she seems to be alright. Mamma mia, gute Besserung!

Türkiye

24 08 07, 18:30:05

Merhaba everyone! Just wanted to tell you I'm having a great hot sunny time in Turkey. Loads of veeery good food and great people. This country is really that tiny bit different from anything I'd seen so far. Hope you're all doing fine too!

No leaks

09 08 07, 15:07:07

To anyone who cares: There were no leaks in JAVA, I'd just assigned too little memory to my little program. A trie of 220 songs can get big!

Cream Sh-boogie bop

09 08 07, 0:47:02

I was at the Prince gig in the O2 Arena yesterday. Good stuuuff. Yes, he is definitely cool. That is: assuming he does not take seriously everything he does. I went with Chris Cannam who is a Prince afeccionado, and yes it was good fun. I spent most of the last working days trying to build a cool trie (not tree) in JAVA. Now that some of the methods are running, I'll have to start looking for the memory leak that must be somewhere in there. Oh dear, I hoped I wouldn't have to worry about those things... Anyway, once it's running I predict it'll give me spectacular results for our Chord Sequence research. Fingers crossed. Uuuh, I'm really tired now, and again did not do my turkish exercises... one week left till my holiday starts!!

Thanks for the compliments

Yes, every single one is welcome! I'm happy at least some people like my website. Haha, have a good week everyone!

Exciting times

23 07 07, 23:47:50

Oh dear, I must have been silent for eons now. Yet, lots of things happen all the time. It's really hard to know where to start. The stuff I'm working on is really satisfying. Yes, I feel I'm making some tiny steps of progress, but generally it's cool because it really seems my PhD thesis will feature some really cool problems (and hopefully some solutions). Recently I have been reading a book on the psychology of music called "Sweet Anticipation". Well, I haven't read it all, but I might be getting there. Also, looking into Jazz harmony is braintwisting. I really might have to get into that a bit more... Meanwhile I'm trying to set up classes in JAVA to model more flexibly the structures needed to research similar to our recent paper. London keeps growing on me, and engaging in local activities makes me feel I'm not just a spectator or even tourist. For example, joining the Regents Canoe Club in Islington has already been so much fun, not just because of the boating itself but also because of the friendly people I've met. This weekend I went to Rostock to celebrate my godsons 2nd birthday. It's so surreal to go back to Rostock just for a weekend, and still meet my friends there and see all the familiar places that the heart of mine embraces. And my parents were also there, even more surreal, haha. Goodnight!

Avenue Q

03 06 07, 18:12:07

For the first time since I've moved to London I've been to see a musical, namely Avenue Q. And yes, it's been extremely entertaining even after a long day of exhausting tourist adventures, and it covers modern life problems in a charming way. Go see it if you can! I'm considering going to see We Will Rock You again, although I was quite disappointed the first time I went some three years ago. The cool thing is: It's all only some fifty minutes of bus and tube rides away! WORK: I would not have thought last week would actually end with a something that worked! I changed some part of the usual algorithm for chord extraction. It seemed to work (at least for the easy 'Let It Be' song), and I'm hoping to prove it's better than the conventional algorithm. No details, because the idea's so good everyone would want to sell it!!! Rubbish, of course. See you!

LaTeX on the Mac / Support Vector Machines

10 05 07, 20:39:14

Helloooo! You see: I'm looking forward to my holidays in Germany, and I'm in a good mood. (Not only) for Mac users: I have discovered that Eclipse is actually quite good at handling LaTeX code additional to being a good editor (which say TeXShop is not). With the TeXLipse extension all you have to do is save the file and Eclipse automatically builds it (if you tick the build automatically option), and that inlcludes BibTeX. In combination with the PDFView program (auto file update!) it's a very nice TeXing environment! Of course, you still have to write your articles yourselves, but with some auto completion features that's as easy as anything :) Today I gave a little very informal presentation on Support Vector Machines to my colleague Amelie. SVM are not big trucks or something, but very powerful statistical classifiers I still do not understand even halfway. Nevertheless it was good to talk a bit about what I do know. iTunes Furniture SVM PCP Bjork

08 05 07, 14:50:43

I'm just bridging the post-lunch drowsiness by telling you I was too rash with my verdict on iTunes. I discovered it does have some useful features, so maybe I won't need Audion. Other than that I am trying to understand Support Vector Machines because I'm giving an informal introduction to them to a colleague of mine on Thursday. Also the Chris Harte's PCP is challenging me: I'm trying to make nice Pitch Class power distributions. POWER, I said! Oh, did I mention I bought new furniture yesterday? I did, and now my tiny space looks much nicer, actually quite romantic, as my flatmate Stel put it. One thing is bothering me a bit, though: How can I get hold of the new Bjork album. There's no bloody record shop anywhere near Mile End! I'll have to go to Central London tonight, I guess. Keep rocking! MM

Way to Work / Audion

01 05 07, 13:18:09

Indeed, my way to work may be the most beautiful of all! In this spring weather it's a pleasure to walk along the canal. Good news for Mac users: there seems to be a music player that does not sell you anything and has a playlist editor that matches WinAmp! It's audion. I just downloaded it, and I can hardly hide my excitement. » http://www.panic.com/audion/
